The impact of rfid/EPC Technology on the packaging industry

as early as World War II, RFID (infinite radio frequency identification) technology has been applied by the U.S. military. Due to its many superior performances, it began to attract people's attention in 2003. IBM, sap, Microsoft and other IT giants have invested heavily in the development and research of this technology and its solutions. At present, RFID technology has been widely used in production, retail, logistics, transportation and other industries. With the retail giant Wal Mart asking all its suppliers to adopt RFID technology by 2008, the trend that it will replace bar code technology is unstoppable. 70% of the goods supplied by Wal Mart's top 100 suppliers come from China, which will certainly promote the development of RFID technology in China. At present, China is engaged in basic research, education and training of RFID and EPC technology, and is actively promoting the development and application of RFID and EPC technology. Because rfid/EPC technology has a very good prospect, this paper will focus on its impact on the packaging industry in the field of logistics. 1 Introduction to RFID technology

radio frequency identification (RFID) is a non-contact automatic identification technology. Its basic working principle is to use the radio frequency signal and spatial coupling transmission characteristics to realize the automatic identification of the identified object. RFID system generally consists of two parts, as shown in Figure 1, which are electronic tag and reader. In the practical application of RFID, the electronic tag is attached to the identified object (surface or interior). When the article with the electronic tag passes through the readable range of the reader, the reader automatically takes out the agreed identification information in the electronic tag in a contactless way, so as to realize the function of automatically identifying the article or automatically collecting the sign information of the article [1]

2 introduction to EPC and EPC system

the full name of EPC is electronic product code, that is, electronic product code. It is a label of RFID, and its product coding standard is proposed by the American EPC Global Association. EPC can provide unique identification for each entity object (including retail goods, logistics units, containers, freight packaging, etc.). The EPC tag itself contains a silicon chip and an antenna. The market price of graphene raw material graphite is about 3000 yuan/ton. It has an authorized browsing device that can receive the data in the chip. The data stored in the chip can include the physical description of the item, such as quantity, style, size and color, as well as relevant information such as the source, shipment, distribution and retail of the goods. The identification between EPC and RFID reader/writer can be completed without physical contact. EPC is a 96 bit code, which is divided into four segments. It is a group of numbers composed of a version number and another three segments of data (domain name manager, object classification, and sequence in turn)

epc system refers to a physical interconnection that covers everything in the world by using RFID, radio frequency identification, wireless data communication and other technologies on the basis of computer interconnection according to EPC coding mode. The EPC system is mainly composed of the following six aspects: EPC coding standard, EPC tag, EPC code, reader, savant (neural network software), object naming service (ONS), and physical markup language (PML). In the physical interconnection composed of these components, the EPC read out by the reader is only an information reference (pointer), which finds its corresponding IP address from the Internet and obtains the relevant item information stored in the address. Then the distributed savant software system is used to process and manage a series of EPC information read by the interpreter. Since there is only one EPC code on the label, and the computer knows other information matching the EPC, it requires ons to provide an automated network database service. Savant transmits the EPC to ons, and ons instructs savant to look up a PML server that saves the product information file. The file can be copied by savant, so the product information in the file can be transmitted to the supply chain

epc system has many important characteristics: 1) EPC code has a large amount of identifiable information; 2) EPC tags have strong adaptability to the environment, are not easy to damage, and can be read quickly at a relatively long distance. The whole process does not need human intervention and operation, and network operation is realized through automatic technology; 3) The whole network adopts an open public Internet network system to avoid the complexity of the system and greatly reduce the system cost; 4) Adopt the standards of some management entities to facilitate promotion and implementation; 5) EPC system is a flexible, open and sustainable development system, which can be upgraded without replacing the original system [2]

the purpose of packaging is to protect products, convey commodity information and stimulate the sales of products. Rfid/EPC technology can help people quickly identify commodities and track commodities. Therefore, it plays a very important role in the field of commodity circulation. Due to the application of RFID tag technology in packaging, it has attracted extensive attention in the packaging industry. Rfid/EPC technology is in its infancy in China, but its development potential is huge, and it will change the traditional packaging technology using bar code:

1) it will change the traditional bar code marking machine, labeling machine and reading and writing equipment, and change the above traditional bar code equipment into the production, pasting and reading and writing equipment of RFID tags

2) improve the efficiency of packaging finished products management. The application of bar code packaging technology can only identify one item at a time, while radio frequency identification can identify multiple items from a long distance, and can monitor the finished packaging products almost in real time, so as to improve the efficiency of packaging product management

3) extend the concept of packaging, that is, in addition to the 3D printer and software system developed by Imperial College London showing the potential for future development to protect products, facilitate transportation, beautiful and other functions, packaging also needs to make general information of products before RFID labels and multimedia information required for sales. From this, we can see that rfid/EPC technology has brought great changes to the packaging field, and the giant carbon fiber composites have achieved higher production efficiency. In the near future, rfid/EPC technology will make packaging technology more information-based and management more efficient [3]

3. 2. The application of rfid/EPC in the field of packaging

generally needs to be stored in the circulation of goods, which is in line with the development trend of circular economy. The use of rfid/EPC technology can realize the informatization of storage management and the automation of commodity allocation. When the reader writer is installed on the shelf, it can detect the variety, location and quantity of goods according to the RFID tag pasted on the commodity package. The information reader writer is connected with the computer network, and the computer can control the stacker, forklift, pick-up truck and other automatic work according to the received information. The use of RFID tags accelerates the order processing speed and reduces the picking error rate

in addition, the use of rfid/EPC technology also creates conditions for the automatic processing of waste package recycling. Because the label chip contains the information of packaging materials, the sorting machine in the waste recycling station can automatically sort waste packages according to the different information read by the reader

in short, the use of RFID tags on packaging is of great significance to protect the interests of enterprises, dealers and consumers, reduce costs and promote sales. Many domestic enterprises have realized the important value of RFID tags and began to produce and use RFID tags. At present, the main problem in the promotion and use of this label is that its cost is high, and it can only be used on the packaging of some valuable goods. At present, many enterprises and scientific research departments at home and abroad are committed to developing low-cost RFID tags. Experts estimate that the price of RFID tags will be reduced to a level acceptable to consumers within five years. With the continuous reduction of its cost, the role of RFID tags will also be brought into full play in the field of packaging

4 conclusion

because the application of rfid/EPC technology is a huge system engineering, involving RFID chips, reading equipment, networks, system security, radio frequency and product packaging design, it needs the joint cooperation and joint promotion of relevant government agencies, industry organizations, application parties, suppliers and media. Only in this way can rfid/EPC technology play an important role in packaging logistics related industries
